Sunday, July 8th

Garak's little body is strong.

For many consecutive days we were told that Garak wouldn't survive the night.  We were told his breathing would continue to weaken and his heart would continue to slow.  We were told the damaged portion of his brain would result in necrosis and spread to the good portions of his brain.  We were told he would aspirate his own saliva, contributing to choking or leading to pneumonia.  We were told his organs would react to the lack of brain signals, and would begin shutting down.   Yet he survives and appears to be stronger. His heart rate and oxygen saturation are healthy and lungs sound pretty good.

We find ourselves questioning everything we have been told.   It was easier to withhold feeding if his death was imminent and food may cause discomfort as his body shuts down.   There was some comfort in knowing his body was making this decision and not us.   If he wants to live, and appears to be improving, shouldn't we resume feeding him?

They may have been wrong about his body, but the end-all factor is his brain.   The hospice team asked our neurologist to call.    She spoke with Jailyn and offered to go over each image of the MRI, and explain what functions were affected by the damage.   The doctor told Jailyn that Garak's brain wasn't just damaged, it was "very, very, very damaged."   If we fed Garak, he could last a couple of years, but he would never improve.   He may even begin to twitch and shake uncontrollably as he grew.  This put us back into the frame of mind that Garak is not coming back. If we held him onto this existence, the image of the beautiful, sleeping boy may be replaced by someone in pain.   It's now completely up to us to determine how long Garak lives.

Jailyn and I have gotten along pretty well through all this.   We fight about how long to water the lawn, but our disagreement on whether to sustain our child has not led to any real quarrel between us.  I understand that as a mother, she is programmed to protect her children.  It's just a matter of realizing if sustaining Garak for a couple of more years while his body changes, his muscles shake, and he faces infection all the while his mind remains absent, is really protecting him.

Yesterday, Jailyn decided she would continue this course.  She took the decision to not feed him with her to the temple, from where she prayed.   She returned with a calm feeling, that we were making the right decision.  She felt that Garak indeed wanted to return to his Heavenly Father.

It has been ten days since he has been fed.

  1. Tyson, thank you for sharing this with us. I check your blog many times a day hoping for an update, but certainly understnad you not wanting to take the precious time away from your family to write. I can't believe the strength your little guy is showing. He is a fighter for sure. I hope you are enjoying this time you have with him to feel of his spirit. I pray that you are able to find comfort in the decisions you have made. I can't imagine how difficult they have been to make. Hold on to what you know is true. Garak will be eternally yours and this separation is just for a short while. I'm sure your dad is awaiting his arrival where they will be together. We love you and your family. May the Lord contine to bless, watch over and comfort each of you.

  2. Dear Tyson and Jailyn,

David's parents just shared the information to view this amazing blog you have created. We are truely heart broken to see the pictures of your sweet little boy facing so many challenges. How faithful you are to love Garak enough to let him go. I'm sure you know more than most of us a little how Heavenly Father felt watching the Savior suffer. Your courage gives me hope that we can all make it through the scary and hard things this life will bring. We will keep you in our prayers. You have a beautiful family!

    Love, Jenny and David Pitcher

  3. What a rollercoaster of emotions this must be. I'm so glad Jailyn was able to get to the temple to find a little peace to help her in her decision. A decision most of us can not even fathom. I'm so glad your mom and siblings were able to come and say goodbye and I know it tortures your mom, not being able to stay and help. Just remember, you have many other's around you who love you and will help at a moment's notice.

    Praying continually for you all,
    Val

  4. I had difficulty even sleeping thinking about your circumstance. I have a little boy on 02, CPAP, and a feeding tube who is almost 2 years old and has Down Syndrome. He has had a long, rough start. I am heart-broken over your situation but I cannot help but wish you would replace the feeding tube and keep waiting for a miracle....waiting for him to give-up on his own. If the Doctors say his systems are going to give out, it would only be a matter of time. It seems as though his body is fighting to live. A rare occurrence for critically ill children - especially one so weak. I wish I could take this little one home and care for him. The medical community is wrong so often - and there are new medical advances everyday. Cling to the life you have! I have been thinking of you all and have been sharing your story. There's still time for a miracle....while there's life, there's hope. Wishing you all the best.

    1. Jailyn & Tyson, I have seen no greater love as parents as I have watched you take care of Garak these last 10 months. For anyone to say that they would love to take Garak home and take care of him as H Butler did is mind boggling. No one could even care for that little boy with as much love as the two of you has shown for him. These last 10 months has been all about what has been best for Garak. I know that every decision you have made and plan on making for Garak has and will be in his best interest. I speak with Jailyn on a daily basis and there is no denying the love that she has for her sweet little boy. Sometimes the most heroic choices are the hardest and show the most love. I hope we can respect Jailyn and Tyson at this time and support them and not try to bring them down.

  5. Jailyn and Tyson,

I just found out about this blog and have spent the last while reading it. My heart goes out to you guys, I can't imagine what you have been going through. Know that Steve and I are thinking about you and praying for you and your family. I'm so glad you were able to get family pictures, they will be a treasure forever. I'm glad that you were able to get assurance at the temple that you are doing the right thing, I'm sure it has been agony wondering if your doing the right thing. Know that we love you and are constantly thinking about you. Tracie and Steve

  7. While I'm sure HButler's comments are heartfelt and pure, and my heart goes out to her situation also, let's be clear that no one can judge another person's circumstances based on their own. Every medical situation is unique. It would be impossible to make a judgement call based on another's outcome. It is simply not the same. This decision is solely between the parents, the doctors and the Lord. I can not think of another situation that would take more courage or faith than to make the decision to let your child go, and then just wait. And wait.

I pray that you are assured that whatever decision you make about your son is the correct one. But you are the only one's with the right to that answer. The Lord trusted you with Garak's care from the beginning, and He certainly hasn't stopped now. We love and admire your courage more than you could possible know.

    3. Perfect response. Thank you for posting this as I was feeling the same things. My heart echoes all of your points. I would hope people would only post supportive comments without presuming they know any better. Thank you again for your thoughtful response.

  11. I agree Franklin Family. Tyson and Jailyn have had to make a very difficult decision. While I can't even imagine ever having to make a decision like this, I know that they are doing the right thing. They love their baby boy more than anything. Sweet Garak has had a hard life from the beginning. But he has been loved more than any baby ever could be. He has been cared for by the most loving parents and family who have showed their devotion and love to him day in and day out - hour by hour - minute by minute. I know this is the hardest thing they have had to do...but it is because they love him. I pray they will feel the love that so many have for them - and the support that we 100% give them. They truly are putting Garak first in this situation...just as they always have.

  12. I also must express how much I agree with Franklin Family and Martha. I do not know of a more amazing mother than Jailyn, it is not a coincidence that Garak came this family. EVERY SINGLE decision she and Tyson have had to make has been in the best interest of Garak. I have loved being able to read about Garak's story... And I think we can all learn so much from Tyson and Jailyn, their selfless acts and unconditional love for their sweet boy. I don't think they need our advice... Only our prayers, love, and support. So with that said, know that the Bushman's love you!
